CREATIVE OR CRAZY?

“Is bipolar a sign of genius?” is the most googled question about the disorder, likely searched by people who have it, in the midst of a manic episode. However, the relationship between bipolar and great creativity has long been explored. Recent studies have found that the disorder is predominantly caused by genetics, passed down through the very same genes that are related to the process of creativity.

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM

There is a theory that throughout our lives we will only truly fall in love three times, at three different stages of life, each time serving three very different purposes. This is known as the Three Love Theory. The premise of the Three Love Theory is that not all love is experienced equally. Anyone with even a small amount of romantic and sexual experience can tell you that love and passion come in many different flavours, and I am not talking about your classic Blue Ribbon spread. I am talking about Messina’s selection of gelato. Each time you fall in love it feels unique – some relationships are passionate and fiery, some are easy and secure, while others are tumultuous and intense. The Three Love Theory explains that each love happens for a specific reason: the first teaches us what we expect from love, the second teaches us about our true selves, and the third teaches us what it means to love another person unconditionally.

THE DEATH OF MONOGAMY

It’s a new age of dating and navigating the uncharted social media matrix while in a relationship can be tough. Long gone are the days of simple, face-to-face adultery. Social media exploded onto the scene and we are out here untangling what it means to be a respectful partner on the internet. Look, I’m not religious but the Bible did lay down a couple of ground rules for monogamous relationships, which made old-fashioned dating pretty straightforward. It basically told us not to cheat, unless you want to be considered a dirty little sinner and wind up in hell. Kinky, I know, but also definitely instils a little fear for the future of your soul. Unfortunately, God or Jesus (or anyone else in the bible for that matter), said nothing about sliding into someone’s DMs or liking everything they’ve ever posted.

A RESERVATION FOR BIPOLAR

It’s a strange concept to imagine your brain as a separate entity. To imagine the very organ responsible for thought creation to have thoughts separate from your own. I mean, I’m not super into croissants or jam or butter for that matter. I’m lactose intolerant, so there’s just no room for croissants in my life. I can’t stand bad table manners either, I would go so far as to describe them as a pet peeve of mine. It’s a feeling I have most days though, that my brain is operating on a different frequency to me. That it sometimes doesn’t belong to me, that I very rarely have any control over my thought process and subsequent reactions. I have had this feeling since I was 19 and received my Bipolar II disorder diagnosis. The day I sat in a strange doctor’s office and watched as the words drip out of his mouth like the butter down the hand of my brain. The day I became my bipolar’s plus-one to every feeling, every day and every breakfast.
